Description
Diatomaceous earth is a widely recognized pesticide ingredient in many pest control products registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It has been proven to kill various types of bugs, including cockroaches, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, spiders, mites, lice, and silverfish. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to fish, birds, aquatic invertebrates, and other wildlife, making it a safer option for wildlife than traditional pesticides.
In contrast, industrial-grade diatomaceous earth has a harmful additive. When purchasing, ensure you use food-grade diatomaceous earth, as other commercial grades may contain harmful additives. DE is not safe for garden use, as it must come in direct contact with pests.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is highly effective in killing various types of bugs by physically damaging their exoskeletons. Farmers dump food-grade diatomaceous earth in with grains when they are stored to kill insects that want to feast on the grain. When added to food, diatomaceous earth is generally recognized as safe by the US Food and Drug Administration.
However, it may not be effective at targeting pest infestations. Diatomaceous earth can cause microscopic tears in the insect’s exoskeleton, while DI is capable of quickly killing a variety of pests that come into contact with the product. To effectively repel and kill silverfish, crickets, fleas, bedbugs, garden snails, and cockroaches, it is essential to use it correctly.
